String theory explained, sort of

Ed Witten, whom some people consider to be the smartest person alive (typically with the possible unspoken exception of the person who uses that description), wears a sweater, sits in an armchair, and explains, to the extent anyone can, where string theory came from.

    Why does it break into Italian for a long section in the middle (repeating what we’ve just heard in English)? ¬†And why does it stop mid-word, mid-sentence, mid-paragraph?
